Revolution News (5/17 @ 3:45PM, EST)
Smash Bros. for launch, backwards compatibility and more

Nintendo unveiled some new details on the much-anticipated Revolution game console at their E3 pre-show press conference. First off, the system is backwards compatible with the GameCube, but that's not all. The system will offer downloads of games from across all their previous systems, spanning 20 years, including NES, SNES and N64. Gamers will be able to download and play their favourite classic games and play them on the Revolution. Whether or not it will cost anything was not commented upon. In addition, owners will have the option of equipping a small, self-contained attachment to play movies and other DVD content.

Furthermore, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed that a wi-fi enabled Super Smash Bros. will be launching alongside the Revolution in 2006. This means that players will be able to play against anyone around the world, and all for no charge. All that is required is having the Revolution be in the vicinity of a wireless connection.

Revolution versions of games in the Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Metroid and Donkey Kong series are currently in the works. No word on when they're planned to be released, and we did not get to see any footage, except for what appeared to be a Metroid tech demo with Samus standing in front of her new ship on top of a mountain of sorts. In addition to these, Miyamoto is also personally working on a special game of his, which was not elaborated on.

Square-Enix is bringing a Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles title to the Revolution, and like Smash Bros., will be wi-fi enabled for online play.
